Social distancing is the new norm and because we can’t do the things we usually do, the vast majority of us tend to get bored rather quickly. But people around the globe have come up with new and creative ways to stay connected and still have fun, all while adhering to public health guidelines. So, what do you do other than binge watching shows on Netflix and zoom meetings? We’ve compiled a list of activities to help make self-quarantining more fun.
Celebrations Go Virtual
Social distancing is no reason to not celebrate birthdays. We live in an age when social media connects us in profound ways. It’s time we use that to our advantage. Use Google Hangout, Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or FaceTime for a virtual family party or a happy hour with friends. Want to give someone a birthday gift? Give them a digital gift like a streaming subscription, lottery ticket, e-book or a digital gift card to make their celebration special. You could even send them money through a trusted money transfer service or pay for their bills online through a service like uLink.
Kids Entertainment
There’s no such rule as restricted screen-time during a quarantine. Keep the little ones occupied and connected with their friends with Messenger Kids. It does not require you download and login to Facebook on their tablets. Plus, as a parent, you have complete control over who their connected with and your child’s use of the app.
#ChalkYourWalk
People around the globe are using chalk on sidewalks to spread positivity. Thousands of chalk drawings and signs have made people’s walks during this pandemic a little bit better. Plus, #ChalkYourWalk has flooded social media with inspirational messages so be sure to post your creations on social media.
#RainbowHunter
Rainbows of hope are also popping up all over our communities, thanks to a social media movement “We will be okay”. It’s really important to show your communities that at the end of every storm, there is a rainbow. Take some time to create your own rainbow and put it up on your window or front door to spread the message of hope, support, unity, love, and strength.
Boardgames Overload
Here we are, locked in, for who knows how long. That’s when boardgames come to the rescue. If you’ve already overdosed on Monopoly and Clue, here are a few digital boardgames that you can play with your distant family and friends.
Listen to Podcasts
If you’ve got books collecting dust or e-books waiting to be read, now is the time! Not much of a reader? Kick back and listen to a podcast! There are a wide variety of topics ranging from news, culture, sports, comedy, crime, health, arts, business and much more. You’re sure to find a few that will interest you. Just download a podcast app like google podcasts or Spotify on Google Play or the iTunes app store and sample from thousands of podcasts made around the world. All podcasts are free and some are quite addictive.
Instagram & Tik Tok Challenges
Get artsy during this social distancing by joining in on one of the many drawing challenges that have been circulating on Instagram or shake things up with a midday dance break, a TikTok dance challenge.
Take on a New Hobby
We all have that one skill that we’ve been longing to learn or perfect. You’re in luck, because there’s never been a better time! Plus, taking on a new hobby may morph into a passion that helps you boost the quality of your life. Try a musical instrument or a sport, knitting, baking, drawing, painting, decoupage or crafting… the options are endless. If you’re not much of an artist, color by number is a great start. Here are 17 hobbies you can start with by watching free online tutorials.
Start an Exercise Routine
Most of us already know the endless benefits of exercising—from improving energy and health to reducing anxiety, stress, and depression. If you’re having trouble beginning an exercise plan or following through, you’re not alone. Many of us struggle getting out of the sedentary rut. Try starting with an activity that you enjoy like walking, dancing, gardening, biking or Zumba. Slowly graduate into some strength training and healthy eating habits and you’ll be in much better shape at the end of the social distancing phase!
Cook
By now you’re probably well stocked on the pantry essentials like pasta, rice, canned or frozen vegetables, and spices. Whether you’ve got a glut of time on your hands or are struggling to get a decent meal on the table, cooking has a way of bringing a sense of pleasure into our lives. Try getting out of your comfort zone and try a new recipe with what you have on hand. You may just end up with happy tummies at home in the process! Here are 5 tips from top chefs on cooking with pantry staples during this time.
Explore the Outdoors
Ease the tension inside by stepping outside. Take a hike. Watch the wildlife. Build a campfire in your backyard. Roast marshmallows. Go fishing. Hone your field skills. If you’re not much of an outdoor person, pitch a tent in your living room and have the kids have a digital sleepover on Messenger Kids.
Lastly, it’s important to make the most of social distancing. Spend quality time at home. See this time as an opportunity to reflect and appreciate your health and your family. Need we mention, wash your hands by singing the Happy Birthday song twice? You already know that! Have fun and stay safe!
